ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING AND SEXUAL ABUSE

The NAU Police Department has received information from the Flagstaff Police Department regarding a late report of an Attempted Kidnapping and Sexual Abuse that occurred in close proximity to the NAU campus.

A female subject reported that an unknown male jumped out from behind a bush and grabbed her on August 30, 2011 between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm. The location of the crime was described as off campus on a dirt path leading between the area of Parking Lot 28C and Fountaine Street. The suspect is described as being tall and possibly having a beard.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT

DETAILS: On July 11, 2011 at approximately 4:26 PM, a male subject was assaulted by two unknown suspects while on the grassy area west of the Gammage Building. The victim was reportedly punched in the face by one suspect, fell to the ground, and then kicked in the head several times by both suspects. The two suspects fled the scene when another individual interceded.
SUSPECT DESCRIPTIONS: The first suspect was described as a tall Native American male wearing glasses and a blue shirt. The second suspect was described as a shorter Native American male, wearing a white shirt with a “bird wing” emblem on the back.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT WITH A FIREARM

DETAILS:  On 06-11-11 at approximately 3:26 AM, a male subject was shot on Franklin Ave near O’Leary St. The unknown shooter fled the scene and was last seen running southbound on Lone Tree Ave.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:  Shooter was described as a white male between 20 and 25 years of age. The shooter had short brown or blonde hair and was wearing a black collared shirt. The Weapon was described as a black auto type handgun, possibly a “Glock”.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY

On June 9, 2011 roommates at McDonald Hall reported someone had broken their window and entered their apartment while they were asleep. The suspect(s) stole items such as food, cigarettes, and cash. The burglary occurred between 11 pm on June 8 and 6 am on June 9.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON

The NAU Police Department has received information from the Flagstaff Police Department regarding a report of an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon that occurred in close proximity to campus. 

On April 12, 2011 at approximately 1:40 pm, a resident at 318 S. Humphrey’s Street reported that a subject wielding a handgun entered the residence and threatened him.  There was no reported robbery or injury related to this incident.  The suspect was described as a black male, 24 to 28 years of age, 6’1” to 6’3” in height, 180 to 200 pounds with a birthmark under his right eye. The suspect was last seen wearing grey to dark baggy, denim clothing and a bandana on his head. The suspect possibly fled the scene in a black Lexus.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON

The NAU Police Department has received information from the Flagstaff Police Department regarding a report of an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon that occurred in close proximity to campus. 

On April 10, 2011 at approximately 12:13 am, a subject reported an unknown male subject pulled a gun on him in the alleyway behind 318 S. Humphrey’s Street.  There was no reported robbery or injury related to this incident.  No suspect description was provided.

Shots Fired at Private Residence

The Flagstaff Police Department (FPD) is investigating an incident in which a private residence was shot at. The residence is located at 318 S. Humphrey’s St. and is occupied by the Delta Chi fraternity. The shooting occurred during the early morning hours of April 9, 2011. At this time, the unknown suspect(s) remain at large and their current whereabouts unknown. There were no reported injuries related to this incident.

TRESPASSING Into Unlocked Dorm Rooms
While Residents are Asleep (2nd Crime Alert)

DETAILS:  On March 27, 2011 a student reported that shortly after 4:00 am, a male subject entered her room while she was sleeping.  Between February 19 and March 6, 2011, the NAU Police Department has received four other reports of trespassing into dorm rooms while the resident is asleep.  Details on those incidents were reported in Crime Alert 2011-3 and can be found below.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION: Possibly Hispanic or darker skinned male, 5’7” to 5’9”, stocky build, short hair, last seen wearing a black coat.

WE WOULD LIKE TO REMIND YOU OF THE FOLLOWING SAFETY TIPS:
- Keep your door locked, even when you are home
- Do not let anyone “tailgate” into the building behind you
- Do not prop open any doors or tamper with the locking mechanisms
- Use your peep hole or window before opening your door
-If you see anything suspicious or if you see someone in the Residence Halls who does not belong there, call NAUPD (3-3000 for emergencies).

TRESPASSING Into Unlocked Dorm Rooms
While Residents are Asleep

DETAILS:  Between March 5 and March 6, 2011, the NAU Police Department received three different reports of male subjects entering unlocked dorm rooms while the female occupants were asleep.  An additional report was made in February 2011 where a female subject entered an unlocked dorm room while the female resident was asleep. 

Suspect #1 (Occurred February 19, 1:00 am, Sechrist Hall) – Female subject has been identified.

Suspect #2 (Occurred March 5, 2:38 am, Reilly Hall) – Hispanic male, 19 years of age, 5’6” or 5’7”, thin build, really curly hair, last seen wearing a black T-shirt.

Suspect #3 (Occurred March 6, 6:15 am, Sechrist Hall) - Native American or Hispanic male, 5’7”, about 30 years of age, average build, short black hair, last seen wearing a gray or black T-shirt and blue jeans.

Suspect #4 – (Occurred March 6, 6:20 am  Reilly Hall) – White male,18 – 24 years of age, medium height, skinny build, darker features as though tan, shaggy brown hair, last seen wearing low-riding pants and a dark shirt with possibly an NAU logo.

ASSAULT

DETAILS: On 02-18-2011 at approximately 0920 hours, a female student reported being fondled over her clothing by an unidentified male subject on the second floor of the University Union. The male fled from the area of the incident on foot and was last seen headed towards the University Field House.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION: White male approximately 5’1” tall with a normal build for his height. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a green shirt underneath, black jeans, and dark colored shoes. He was in possession of a black backpack and a white binder.

ARMED ROBBERY

DETAILS: A male student reported being robbed between approximately 2335 and 2340 hours this evening in the quad area north of the Engineering Building (Bldg. 69).  

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION: Hispanic male, medium build, approximately 6’0”, wearing a black Hurley brand hooded sweatshirt and white shoes.

ASSAULT

DETAILS: A female student reported that she was sexually assaulted between approximately 0230 and 0330 hours this morning in the area of McConnell Drive just west of San Francisco Street.  

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:  Native American male, medium build, 5’8” or 5’9” with short hair.  The suspect possibly was riding a bicycle earlier.

ASSAULT

On 10/27/10 at 10:24 pm and 10/28/10 at 6:30 pm, two separate incidents were reported in which a paintball gun was discharged at pedestrians travelling on or near Knoles Drive. One student was struck in the back, and the second student was struck in the head: both sustained minor injuries. The paintballs were fired from a moving vehicle, described as a four door sedan, dark in color (possibly blue), equipped with a bicycle rack on the trunk.

ASSAULT

DETAILS:  On October 19, 2010, it was reported to the NAU Police Department that an Assault had taken place north of Mountain View Hall on Franklin Avenue.  At approximately 10:42pm, the female victim was exiting the gated fence just north of Mountain View Hall and began walking towards her vehicle parked on Franklin Avenue.  A white in color 4-door sedan vehicle was parked on the road and occupied by several males.  While walking by, one of the doors opened and an occupant grabbed her arm and said “Hey little girl Hey do you want some candy?”  The female was able to pull away from his hold on her and run away to safety.   

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:  Black Male.  No further information
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION:  White in color, 4 door, sedan with tinted windows.

TRESPASS/AGGRAVATED ASSAULT

DETAILS: On October 16, 2010 at approximately 10:18 P.M. three male subjects entered a residence in the area of DuPont Ave. and S. Humphrey’s St. and physically assaulted a resident and stole items of property from the residence.  All three suspects fled from the residence on foot.  Two suspects remain at large.  At this time, descriptions of the two remaining suspects are not known.

TRESPASS/AGGRAVATED ASSAULT

DETAILS:  The NAU Police Department has received information from the Flagstaff Police Department regarding a report of a trespass/aggravated assault that occurred in close proximity to campus.  On July 16th, at approximately 2:50 A.M; an unknown assailant entered a private residence on South O’Leary Street and assaulted an occupant for unknown reasons. The case remains under investigation.

VEHICLE BURGLARIES

DATE & TIME OF OCCURRENCE:  March 23-24, 2010

LOCATION:  Parking lots (central & north campus)

REPORTED OFFENSE: Several incidents of motor vehicle thefts and burglaries have been reported to the NAU Police Department.  In several instances the suspect(s) removed off-road bolt on style equipment from the exterior of the vehicles as well as entered vehicles and remove valuables.  Vehicles involved include Jeep, Toyota, Chevrolet and Ford full size pick-up trucks.

Crime Prevention Tips

Be mindful of audio equipment – If you own a detachable stereo faceplate, consider removing it and securing it in a safe place.

Do not leave valuables in plain view – Don’t leave valuables in your car, or at the very least, do not leave them in plain view.  If it can be seen, it can be stolen.

Consider using antitheft devices – Aside from locking doors and closing your windows consider purchasing an alarm system or steering wheel lock (such as “The Club”).

Park in well lit areas – Avoid parking next to large vehicles or in secluded areas.

Be a good witness – If you observe a crime in progress or suspicious activity, call the police immediately!  Describe exactly what you observed with as many details as possible.  Give complete descriptions such as gender, race, age, height, weight, hair color, clothing, tattoos, and scars.  Try to get a license plate if a vehicle is involved.

ASSAULT

The NAU Police Department has received a report of a male subject attempting to hug a female employee while she was taking the trash out from Cline Library.  The incident occurred on the north side of the building at 9:05 p.m. on February 15th.  The suspect first engaged the employee in conversation about what she was doing then grabbed her by the wrist with one hand while placing his other hand on her shoulder.  A similar unconfirmed incident reportedly occurred in the same area approximately two weeks prior.

The suspect in this matter is described as a Middle-Eastern male, approximately 5’06” tall, with black hair and brown eyes.  The suspect’s right front tooth and eye tooth were broken, he had body odor, and he was wearing a zip-up sweatshirt that was possibly orange in color.

AGGRAVATED ROBBERY

DDETAILS:  The NAU Police Department has received information from the Flagstaff Police Department regarding a report of an aggravated robbery that occurred in close proximity to campus.  On February 13th, at approximately 8:37 P.M; a male subject reported being the victim of an aggravated robbery in the wooded area east of the Flagstaff Village Apartments located at 240 W. Saunders Dr. No weapons were used but the victim was physically assaulted.  

SUSPECT DESCRIPTIONS: A white male, tall with a very thin build, wearing a black sweatshirt with “Independent” written on it in red lettering. A Native American male, short with a heavy build, wearing a black winter coat.

SURREPTITIOUS VIEWING

DETAILS:  On February 11, 2010, it was reported to the NAU Police Department that a male subject had entered the second floor center men’s restrooms on two separate occassions at Cowden Hall at approximately 2:30 am and again at approximately 7:45 am.  The subject was reported as lying down on the bathroom floors while viewing the male victims while they either showered or used the restroom.    

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:  Caucasian Male, approximately 5’ 8” to 5’ 10” tall, medium build with medium length sandy blond hair. At the time of the first incident the subject was wearing jeans and a white t-shirt. On the second incident the subject was wearing blue shorts, no shirt and carrying a white basket with hygiene items.

 

SURREPTITIOUS VIEWING

DETAILS:  On February 2, 2010, it was reported to the NAU Police Department that a male subject had entered two of the women’s restrooms at Tinsley Hall on January 31 between approximately 8:00 pm and 9:15 pm.  The subject reportedly viewed a female resident and attempted to view another while they showered.    

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:  Native American Male, approximately 5’ 8” to 5’ 10” tall with a medium build. This subject has acne scars on his face. At the time of the incident the subject was wearing a dark ball cap with unknown white logo, a dark striped hoodie and blue jeans.

In the early morning hours of November 25, 2009, five small homemade devices made of plastic bottles containing hydrochloric acid and aluminum foil were found in and around the Mountain View Dorm.  The devices were designed to burst with serious potential for injury and property damage. Three of the devices had burst.

ARSON

Between November 19, 2009 and November 24, 2009, the NAU Police Department has investigated five cases of arson on the first and second floors of Allen Hall.  An additional incident occurred at Sechrist Hall.

Between 11-19-09 and 11-21-09, NAU PD has investigated four cases of arson. INDECENT EXPOSURE

Details: On 10-26-09 at approximately 7:35 PM, a male subject approached a female student while she was exiting her vehicle in Parking Garage 96A. The subject exposed himself to the student and began following her. The student entered Aspen Crossing Hall and the subject did not continue to follow her.

Suspect Description: The suspect is described as a dark complexion male, possible Native American, approximately 5’8” with a heavyset build and bald or very closely shaven hair. The suspect was last seen wearing dark jeans with a brown jacket.

ARMED ROBBERY

DETAILS:  The NAU Police Department has received information from the Flagstaff Police Department regarding a report of an armed robbery that occurred in close proximity to campus.  On October 11, at approximately 3:18 AM, four male subjects reported being the victims of armed robbery in the area of Agassiz Street and Dupont Avenue.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION: Two Hispanic or possibly Native American males wearing hooded sweatshirts and driving a white Chevrolet pickup truck.  One suspect displayed a firearm and the other displayed a knife during the robbery.

SAFETY TIPS:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the police department
  • Avoid shortcuts through wooded areas, parking lots, or alleys.  Avoid isolated, dark areas.
  • Use campus safety escort services while on campus.
  • Body language counts.  Walk with confidence.  Show that you are aware and in control.
  • Always let someone know where you are going and when you will return.
  • Be discreet.  Don’t advertise your social life or personal plans.
  • If you feel that you are being followed look directly at the person - awareness is often a deterrent.  Head to the closest public area.  Do not be afraid to scream if you need help.  If you have a cell phone, call the police.

TRESPASS

On 09-16-09 at approximately 1837 hours, a Native American male climbed up to the second floor balcony of Roseberry Apartments and attempted to gain access into an occupied apartment through an unsecured screen door.  The subject is identified as a Native American male, approximately 5’08’’-5’10’’, weighing 160-175 pounds with shoulder length black hair and wearing a white shirt with several stains and black/blue jeans.

BURGLARY and VOYEURISM

On August 27, 2009, officers of the Flagstaff Police Department responded to a report of a "peeping tom" in the Ponderosa Parkway neighborhood. Initial investigation led to the arrest of a suspect who was booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility for various criminal charges that include possession of child pornography, trespass, and possession of marijuana for sale. Subsequent investigation led to additional charges to include burglary and voyeurism. The 42 year old suspect has been identified as a Northern Arizona University graduate student and former employee.

ASSAULT

On 6-20-2009 at approximately 9:45 PM the NAU Police Department responded to two incidents on S. San Francisco St. near Sechrist Hall in which a pellet or bb gun was fired at vehicles traveling on the roadway.  The first incident damaged a window on a vehicle.  The driver of the second vehicle incurred injury after being struck with the projectile after it entered the vehicle through an open window.  The projectiles were believed to be fired by unknown suspects from the area of Citizen’s Cemetery.

Vehicle Burglaries

REPORTED OFFENSE:  Several incidents of motor vehicle burglary and criminal damage have been reported to the NAU Police.  In several instances the suspect(s) enter vehicles and remove valuables.

Crime Prevention Tips

  • Be mindful of audio equipment – If you own a detachable stereo faceplate, consider removing it and securing it in a safe place.
  • Do not leave valuables in plain view – Don’t leave valuables in your car, or at the very least, do not leave them in plain view.  If it can be seen, it can be stolen.
  • Consider using anti theft devices – Aside from locking doors and closing your windows consider purchasing an alarm system or steering wheel lock (such as “The Club”).
  • Park in well lit areas – Avoid parking next to large vehicles or in secluded areas.
  • Be a good witness – If you observe a crime in progress or suspicious activity, call the police immediately!  Describe exactly what you observed with as many details as possible.  Give complete descriptions such as gender, race, age, height, weight, hair color, clothing, tattoos, and scars.  Try to get a license plate if a vehicle is involved.

Sexual Assault

DETAILS:  A female student reported that she was sexually assaulted while walking across the east practice football fields on January 7, 2009 at approximately 1:45 am.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION: Native American or Hispanic male, muscular build, height of 5’7” – 5’9”, weight of 165 – 170 pounds, almost shoulder length dark hair, wearing a long sleeved black T-shirt and blue jeans.  Suspect had a square jaw line with a dimple or crease in it. 

SAFETY TIPS:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Walk or jog with a friend, not alone. 
  • Avoid shortcuts through wooded areas, parking lots, or alleys. 
  • Avoid isolated, dark areas. 
  • Use campus safety escort services.
  • Body language counts!  Walk with confidence.  Show that you are aware and in control.
  • Always let someone know where you are going and when you will return.
  • Be discreet.  Don’t advertise your social life or personal plans and those of your coworkers to people visiting or calling your place of work.
  • If you feel that you are being followed look directly at the person - awareness is often a deterrent.  Head to the closest public area.  Carry a whistle or noise maker.  Do not be afraid to scream if you need help.  If you have a cell phone, call the police!
  • Park in an area that will be well lit when you return.
