As the nation grapples with an increasing need for scientists, engineers and technical experts, Northern Arizona University finds itself perfectly poised to attract more teachers and students into these fields.
In December 2007, NAU received a $3.4 million grant that has the potential to more than double the number of science and math teachers NAU currently is producing.
"Northern Arizona University has an extraordinary responsibility not just to produce more graduates in these fi elds, but to produce more teachers to go into the schools and provide the necessary education," said NAU President John Haeger.
The NAUTeach program will introduce undergraduate math and science majors to elementary and secondary school teaching, giving them a low-risk way to try teaching as a career. The model has been shown to dramatically increase student recruitment into math and science teaching.
