Do you want to explore the workings of international politics? Do you learn better by engaging in an activity than when brooding over a textbook? If this sounds like you, NAU Model UN may be right for you!

What is the Model United Nations?
NAU Model United Nations participates in authentic simulations of the U.N. General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. Model UN programs are a great way for students of all ages to learn about international relations and to gain a better sense of what a varied and fascinating world we live in. They also are a perfect "hands on" way to gain experience with basic skills - such as communication, negotiation tactics, and conflict prevention - that we all need in our day-to-day lives.

In a Model UN club students become diplomats. Each student becomes the "employee" of one of the world's 192 governments. The student familiarizes him/herself with the foreign policy agenda of his/her new employer and then represents this agenda to the outside world. If he/she represents a hegomon, he/she will flaunt his/her government's power to get his/her way. If he/she is "employed" by a dictatorship, he/she will tell the world why human rights violations are in fact no such thing.

But where is it all going down? NAU Model UN typically attends national or regional conferences twice a year. Previous conferences have taken place in cities as diverse as Las Vegas, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. There, students from universities all over the country convene, strategize, negotiate, write resolutions, and shape the future of the world. What a great way to learn the intricacies of world politics!
What is NAU's Model UN all about?
NAU's Model UN is run by students. We meet Tuesday nights at Cline Library, where we practice parliamentary procedure, plan fundraising drives, and discuss international affairs. Students have the option of getting up to three independent study credits in return for their involvement and support of the group.

NAU is well recognized at the conferences we regularly attend. Our group has won numerous prizes and awards, such as distinguished and outstanding delegates, research awards, and outstanding delegation. Countries that we have represented in the past include the following: Afghanistan, Australia, Botswana, Colombia, Cote d'Ivoire, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Netherlands, North Korea, Pakistan, Palestinian Liberation Organization, Russian Federation, Serbia and Montenegro, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Syria, Ukraine, and Zimbabwe.
