Dean Leads Among Democratic Primary Voters   Howard Dean is the frontrunner in the Arizona Democratic presidential primary, with 22 percent of registered Arizona Democrats saying they will vote for him in the February 3rd election. Wesley Clark, at 12 percent, is the only other candidate to have double-digit support, despite his late entry into the race. The election is still competitive, though, as thirty-nine percent of Democrats remain undecided. The survey of 418 randomly-ed Arizona Democratic Party voters was conducted for the Arizona Indian Gaming Association by the Social Research Laboratory of Northern Arizona University. Calling took place between November 14 and December 9, 2003. Results are accurate within a +/- 4.9 percent margin of error, at a 95 percent confidence level.   12/15/2003
Forests are Unhealthy, Say Arizonans   A majority of Arizonans think the forests in Arizona are unhealthy, according to recent Grand Canyon State Poll findings. Three-quarters favor using controlled burns to reduce the damaging effects of wildfire. With regard to forest thinning, more Arizonans favor thinning both large- and small-diameter trees than thinning smaller trees alone. When asked whose forest management recommendations they find most persuasive, Arizonans favored federal land management agencies and universities. Few Arizonans are persuaded by the views of timber companies on how best to manage forested areas.   12/3/2003
Ban Junk Food in Public Schools, Say Arizonans   Fifty-nine percent of Arizonans support banning the sale of all non-nutritious foods (junk food) in Arizona public schools, according to the results of a recent telephone survey. Two-thirds of Arizonans (65%) oppose soft drink sales in public schools, and seventy percent oppose fast food franchises selling their products in the schools. While over three-quarters of Arizonans (78%) are aware that obesity rates in the state are increasing, two-thirds (67%) believe that taxing junk food would not be an effective way of battling obesity.   11/13/2003
Gay and Lesbian Civil Unions Supported in Arizona   A majority of Arizonans support allowing gays and lesbians to form civil unions giving them many of the same rights and benefits as a married man and woman. In addition to supporting civil unions, Arizonans support allowing same-sex couples to share health insurance coverage from one partner’s job and allowing same-sex couples to receive social security benefits when one partner dies.   10/30/2003
Bush re-election favored by Arizonans   Despite a decline in public approval, President George W. Bush is favored for re-election by Arizona voters. Almost half of registered voters in the state say they would re-elect President Bush to another four-year term as president, if the presidential election was held today. One-third of registered voters say they would vote for the Democratic candidate for president.   10/28/2003

Physician Assisted Suicide Supported in Arizona   A majority of Arizonans support a bill to legalize physician-assisted suicide. This law makes it legal for doctors to help terminally ill patients end their lives by giving them a prescription for fatal drugs. To be eligible, patients have to be diagnosed as having a terminal disease and not more than six months left to live.   3/14/2003
Survey: Arizonans Cautious About War   Arizonans are cautious about joining the nation’s rush to war in Iraq. Support for diplomatic efforts (ex. weapons inspections) is equal to support for military action. People prefer resolving the conflict with diplomatic efforts rather than with military action.   3/13/2003
