To arrange an audition, please call the band office at (928) 523-3413 or send an e-mail expressing your interest to: symphonicwinds@NAU.EDU

This year’s audition dates are:

January 19
February 22 and 23
March 1 and April 5

If applicants are unavailable during these days or would like to come at a different time, they may request a special audition directly with Professor Vining by e-mail:  David.vining@nau.edu  or by calling the trombone and euphonium studio office at (928) 523-3786.

If neither of these options will work, applicants may send a high quality recording (CD format) to:

David Vining
Northern Arizona University
School of Music
Box 6040
Flagstaff, AZ  86011-6040

The recording must include a solo with accompaniment and a two octave chromatic scale.

Master’s Students

In addition to the three requirements listed above, candidates for the MM degree must prepare the following orchestral excerpts:

Tenor Trombone:
Mozart – Tuba Mirum from “Requiem”
Berlioz – Hungarian March

Bass Trombone:
Schumann - “Rhenish” Symphony
Berlioz – Hungarian March

Euphonium:
Holst – “Mars” from the Planets
Hindemith – excerpts from “Symphonic Metamorphosis” (from the band arrangement)

Applicants who need copies of these excerpts can request PDF files from Professor Vining.

Audition format:

The first half of the audition will consist of playing your prepared selections.  The second half is a mini-lesson with Mr. Vining during which students will receive suggestions on their playing.  Part of the entrance requirement is to be receptive to suggestions and interested in improvement.  Auditions may last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.
