The other part of the application process is to play an audition for Professor Dunn.  This may be done in person (preferred) or by mailing a recording. To arrange an audition, please call the band office at (928)523-3413 or send an e-mail expressing your interest to: symphonicwinds@NAU.EDU Audition dates for students beginning in Fall 2008 are: January 19 February 22 and 23 March 1

The recording must include a solo with accompaniment, one contrasting unaccompanied piece or etude, and the following major scales (Bb pitch-not concert pitch): C# 1 octave; F# 2 octaves; C two octaves.

Undergraduate and Transfer Students

1. A lyrical section and a technical section from a representative solo (no accompaniment necessary). 

2. Prepare all major scales (two octaves where possible) and select two minor scales to prepare in natural, harmonic and melodic forms. 

3. Sight reading

Some suggested solos are listed below.  These are not required solos but only suggestions and other comparable solos are certainly acceptable.

Audition format:

The first half of the audition will consist of playing your prepared selections.  The second half is a mini-lesson with Dr. Dunn during which students will receive suggestions on their playing.  Part of the entrance requirement is to be receptive to suggestions and interested in improvement.  Auditions may last anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes.
