GPS Features & Information

GPS goes GRAD!
The spring 2013 term brings GPS to all graduate courses! GPS is now open and available for every NAU class! You requested it, we delivered: GPS now offers a new "general feedback" option! Quickly send general feedback or current status updates to your students!
New GPS Features!
No more copy/paste – easily send a message to multiple students using the new Message Builder! See only the students you need – using the new sort/filter options! No more dropped students – you won’t see students that have dropped your class, unless they have message history. View the brief tutorial.

GPS Correlated to Retention
NAU's academic feedback system is improving student's academic behavior and is correlated to an increase in retention. Fall 2010 first-time/full-time students receiving GPS messages from their instructors had a 4.4% higher retention rate compared to students in the cohort who did not receive a GPS message. GPS isn't just for freshmen–students; surveys indicate that all students benefit from instructor feedback. View retention report.
Report Official Grades with GPS
Because nobody likes duplicating work! If you use GPS to communicate grades, you can now copy those grades to your LOUIE grade roster with the click of a button. Midterm grade reporting, final grades? GPS makes it easy.
Introducing "As Of" Grades
Easier grade entry, student portal grade display, and Bb Learn grade book import. Click here for demo.

Enter current letter grades with just one click. View and import students' grades from Bb Learn in bulk or individually. Click here to see if your Bb Learn column is set up correctly. Grades will be sent via GPS FERPA secured emails, and displayed on students' MyNAU portal!
A great way to get started with GPS!
Check out GPS Test Drive, send a test email to yourself - this way you'll know exactly what's sent to students. View the getting started tutorial!

Did you know...

GPS was designed and developed by NAU faculty and staff?

GPS isn’t meant to replace your existing systems of student feedback, e.g. Bb Learn, email, face-to-face; it is intended to support and augment your efforts.

  • GPS officially documents your student communication/retention efforts
  • GPS allows advisors and support personnel to offer additional assistance to students by addressing your documented concerns and identifying patterns of student behavior across multiple classes
  • GPS links students to NAU resources via ResourceConnect

Additional Comments:

"I have found the new GPS system extremely easy to use and the student response has been tremendous. Normally, I receive a response from a student within 24 hours, and a majority are quite surprised that we instructors contact them."
Richard Holloway, Biology, and member of the GPS Design Team

"In time GPS has the potential to offer NAU teachers and administrators a far richer understanding of each individual student's history. GPS could be a key part of our continued efforts to retain and graduate more students, offering them another form of strong institutional support from their freshman year through to graduation."
Laura Gray-Rosendale, English

"Thank you, for this tool. I've used it in my course three times already, and I think it will have a positive effect on student participation. I have always sent emails to students who missed an assignment but did not always get responses from them. I think that the GPS emails seem more official to the students. In any case, all of the emails I sent through the system garnered responses."
Alison Brown, Comparative Studies

Usage and Adoption:

GPS is growing, but we need your help to increase instructor usage and adoption. 19% of eligible instructors (teaching undergraduate courses) are using GPS and are reaching 36% of all undergraduate students.

This exponential relationship further increases with additional instructor adoption, please pass the word about GPS on to your collegues.

Schedule a personal GPS introduction and demo by emailing Zane Shewalter.
